Embracing Holistic Well-Being

In the Western world, we have long since been practising well-being from a very mechanical and medical lens. The results of which have often produced inefficient progress in regaining true health, and are mainly propped up by drugs and surgeries.
I will preface everything written in this article with this: I am incredibly grateful for what modern medicine has achieved and continues to offer us. It absolutely has its place in our overall healthcare system, and it is imperative that we continue to advance our knowledge in this field. This article does not aim to diminish the achievements of modern medicine, but rather to highlight how we have come to rely too heavily on it when there are other (and frankly more sustainable) alternatives for returning to optimal internal health from many ailments of the body and mind.
Embracing holistic well-being means taking responsibility for yourself. It means understanding that you are a deeply intelligent being made up of many systems, and that those systems require nourishment in both internal and external ways to function and thrive.
Your physical health is a reflection of your energetic health - and your energetic health is affected by your thoughts, feelings and actions.
To embrace holistic practices as a form of healing is to empower yourself with the knowledge to nourish yourself from the inside out. It goes beyond eating the right foods, getting enough sleep and exercising. Holistic practices extend to :
Assessing beliefs that are unnatural to your spirit but have become part of the 'identity' you inadvertently adopted through lived experiences
Unpacking habitual thought patterns and emotional triggers that reaffirm this identity and create an endless cycle that takes you nowhere
Opening yourself up to becoming more of your true self, letting go of negative thoughts and emotions harboured towards yourself and others
Prioritising evolving the way you love yourself and others, finding a deeper meaning and purpose to life that lights you up and expands into your everyday decision-making
When you focus on these things habitually instead of fears, resentments, blame, guilt e.t.c you become a force that is feeding itself with an expansive energy source rather than a contractive energy force.
How Holistic Well-Being Nourishes Your Inner Landscape in a Way that Western Medicine Does Not
When we speak of holistic well-being, we are inviting a harmony that embraces every facet of our existence. It is not about managing symptoms or seeking quick fixes. Instead, it is about cultivating a rich soil where healing and growth can naturally arise. Our bodies are literally made to continually return themselves to optimal conditions - not just for survival but to thrive. Many clients who come to me use terms like 'I'm broken' or speak so negatively about their body because it is hurting in some way. When, in reality, their body is doing exactly what it is made to do - signalling that something is creating disharmony in the ecosystem and needs to be addressed. Whenever we have illness or pain, we are supposed to respond to our body, not treat it like the enemy. Imagine your computer telling you it has a virus, and you getting frustrated and saying, 'I'm just going to throw it away and get a new one'.
My intention with every client I work with is to honour their body and encourage them to do the same by taking responsibility for themselves. There are no magic cures, and generally, the treatments I offer will only ever provide temporary relief if they go home and continue to live their life without changing the things that are causing their ailments in the first place. It is not about blaming and shaming, but about taking an honest look at how you are choosing to live and respecting that those choices affect you on all levels.
If I break my leg or suffer severe burns to my skin, then believe me, I want to go to a hospital and receive medical treatment. However, if I have back pain, poor digestion or my energy levels are consistently low, then I want to have the holistic knowledge to assess what I could be doing to inadvertently cause these things, and take the appropriate action to help my body return to a more balanced state.
The truth is, the modern medical system is not set up to treat the individual as a whole ecosystem, and often the 'solution' is to prescribe a medication that comes with its own side effects, requiring more medication to treat those, and so on and so on. Thankfully, eastern and holistic practices are gaining more traction in the medical field - and this is very exciting! The real path to progress in our healthcare is for there to be a marriage between medical and holistic treatments - that emphasise creating the conditions for the body to naturally heal itself and using drugs and surgery only when absolutely necessary, or to get the ball rolling in severe cases, so that someone can feel well enough to begin holistic work.
It is also important to accept that holistic well-being is often a slower approach that takes more effort on your part seen as it requires getting to the root cause. The reward, however, is long-term sustainable results and internal healing that has a positive domino effect on other aspects of your well-being. The western model generally has more immediate but less effective results for long-term recovery and keeps you reliant on an external source to manage symptoms, as opposed to identifying and impacting the root cause.

Practical Holistic Well-Being Tips to Integrate Daily
While the heart of well-being is often soulful and intuitive when cultivated over time, there are foundational principles that offer clear, actionable steps for you to weave into your daily life. Here are some examples of holistic practices that you can start working on today
Mindful Movement - Engage intentionally with movement that honours your body's current state. Investigate what feels restricted, what feels weak, what needs a more careful approach, and respond with movement that softens what needs to be softened and activates what needs to be activated. This can help release tension and reconnect you with your physical presence.
Grounding Practices - Spend a few minutes barefoot on natural earth, sinking your energy down or visualise roots extending from your feet into the ground. This simple act can stabilise scattered energy. Ancient Chinese practices like Qigong and Tai Chi are amazing if you need help learning how to become aware of your subtle energy body.
Breath Awareness - Practice slow, intentional breathing to calm the nervous system. Even a few deep breaths can shift your state from anxious to centred. Shallow breaths contribute to chest tightness, headaches, increased heart rate and high blood pressure, creating suboptimal conditions for your ecosystem
Meditation - Learning to be alone with yourself and present in your own body is one of the best skills you can ever develop. Though it may seem difficult to start with, regular practice will offer you relief, insight and guidance in more ways than you can imagine. Limit noise, light and discomfort to help you develop your ability to meditate.
Get Real - Create space for yourself to ask and answer some big questions like "What do I want out of life, and what am I willing to do to create that for myself?". When we actually stop and give our attention to big questions, we become aware of how we have been limiting our own growth by excusing our behaviours and how to create actionable steps to get to where we want to be
These tips are not about perfection or adding pressure. They are invitations to reflect honestly, listen deeply and respond with kindness to your own needs.
